Most people know the image of the railway track and platform inside the Birkenau camp. However, this was only operational from May to November 1944. Before that, cattle trucks of Jews arrived on the Second Ramp (‘Judenrampe’), a platform located halfway between the Auschwitz and Birkenau camps. Selection would then take place. The picture shows that platform with one of the cattle trucks. From where the picture is taken, those passing to the left of the track would walk into camp and be registered, those to the right would be loaded onto waiting lorries and taken straight to the gas chambers.
